Wolf Parade - Call It a Ritual

. . (in post from . Download this at Amazon iTunes)

Many years ago I asked a good friend of mine who is now a very successful professional musician, what my next step in learning was as a musician. I was so surprised with the fact that he could play anything he heard without fumbling for notes; and not only on the keyboard, but also on the bass, the guitar and several other instruments.

He told me that the most important thing a musician should learn is HARMONY. Now, I fully understand why:

When you study harmony, you are not only studying guitar, but all instruments at the same time. Harmony is notes and chords in their context. You start to understand the relationship between note intervals and scales, scales and chords. You know what will work effectively in a musical situation and what will not. You can consciously combine genres (i.e. fusion).

Once you've started learning harmony, you literally 'take off' musically. You have so many directions you can go that you'll never get bored. There's always something new to discover once you get 'out of the box'.

But the problem is which direction to take, what to learn first and what to leave for later on. When people are looking for online jazz guitar lessons; are they just looking for information, or how to put the information to good use?

If it were just a matter of information, the web is filled with hundreds of sources to find out what the Lydian Mode is, for example. Wikipedia itself has the definition and an explanation for anyone interested in knowing about it. But how to put it into use effectively is an entirely different matter.

Good online Jazz guitar lessons are well structured in a step-by-step manner and this takes the guesswork out of your learning. You learn step-by-step through watching videos and seeing it written in musical notation and TAB, practice it and consolidate it by playing along with backing tracks so you get the right feel. By learning in this way, you can clearly see how much you've progressed; and being able to play exactly what you hear is one step closer every time.

I have done extensive research on online jazz guitar lessons and, believe me, there's a big difference between what you can get for free and well structured lessons. Free lessons give you the information, but are very limited in teaching you how to use it. Learning to use the information is the key to really learning, not just the information itself.

What do you think? Should the wedding MC be the main entertainment at the wedding reception, or the "ringmaster" coordinating each step along the way? Whether you have been asked to be a wedding master of ceremonies or you are a wedding couple planning your wedding, you need to carefully understand the wedding MC's role. It is critical to the success of the wedding reception.

The traditional role as wedding master of ceremonies is to make sure everything happens as and when it should, and that the appropriate atmosphere of happy celebration for the wedding couple is maintained. The wedding MC must know when to take the lead as the "chairman" of proceedings, and when to step back to avoid dominating the event. A good knowledge of wedding etiquette is required, an understanding of the wishes of the couple getting married, and the ability to speak well and with good humor to set the mood and gain everyone's cooperation.

The traditional wedding MC, then, is closer to being the ringmaster than the main act for the reception. Usually the wedding MC is a volunteer, sometimes also the best man or the father of the bride, but most commonly a family member or friend with the appropriate personality and experience. To expect a volunteer to be the main entertainment will usually be asking too much, but you can mostly count on there being someone in the couple's circle of family and friends who can play the ringmaster's role successfully.

Most wedding MC volunteers will make a good effort to bring humor and fun to the introductions, thanks and toasts as the reception proceeds. Some wedding couples will be fortunate enough to have an outgoing and entertaining person they can call on to extend the wedding MC's role a step further, to add an element of performance and entertainment. For many weddings it is the best man's speech that generates the most hilarity. At many receptions there will be a specific entertainment included in the program, such as a singer, often a talented guest. The danger of having a wedding MC who dominates the reception with his personality as an entertainer is that he will detract from the contributions of the other less professional and outgoing participants. The wedding couple needs to be very clear with their chosen MC about the role they would like him to play.

An option is to hire a professional wedding MC. That is often an expensive option, and favored mostly for celebrity or society weddings. The ironical thing is that a professional MC is usually expected by the guests to provide an entertaining act, while professional MCs often see their role mainly from the traditional ringmaster perspective.

Being the master of ceremonies for a wedding is a big responsibility that can make or break the success of the reception and how it is remembered. In most cases a successful wedding MC will not set out to give a high profile entertaining performance at the reception, but will make sure he is well briefed and organized to make sure everything goes smoothly to make the reception a happy and memorable celebration - with the wedding couple as the stars of the show, not the MC.

A successful wedding MC needs checklists, templates and guidelines to make sure nothing important is overlooked at the wedding reception. A volunteer wedding MC may only do the job once or twice, ever. The flute is a woodwind instrument that is still widely popular even though it has been around for hundreds of years. The flute is the highest pitched instrument in most bands (especially beginner ones, as the piccolo is not always used), and it is made of metal. Unlike the other members of the woodwind family (the clarinet, the saxophone, etc) the flute does not utilize reeds. Rather, the sound is produced by pushing air through the cylindrical instrument.

The proto-flute has been around for thousands of years - archeologists unearth bones with holes in them can be played very similar to a flute all the time. As of writing this article, every civilization past and present has some instrument that resembles a flute; yet the flute as we know it is a relatively modern invention. The final product, the flute still used today in beginner bands to professional orchestras, was created only a couple hundred years ago.

Flutes are deceptive in their appearance - although the flute can be very easy to play once you get the hang of it, they can be very tricky in the initial learning stages. Sound is created by pursing the lips, blowing into a hole, and the new wind stream (introduced by the breath) bounces around and interacts with the air already in the cylinder. Specific notes then correspond to whichever holes are opened or closed, which ultimately lengthens or shortens the cylinder (or resonator, to be more specific). A good, strong tone is only achieved when the air flow is constant. That may sound easier than it actually is, but practice will strengthen the diaphragm and thus lead to loud clear tones.

Most flutes people will encounter are the transverse flutes - these are the flutes that are side blown. Transverse flutes can accommodate each individuals arm length, which is important to ensure all proper fingerings can be achieved. Other flutes include Pan Flutes (as depicted in Greek mythology, most famously), Ocarina, Xaio, Indian Bamboo Flute, Bass flute, and the list goes on and on. On the professional level, virtually all flautists play "open hole" flutes, which in appearance are like beginning transverse flutes, but are much harder to play.

Flutes are common in beginner bands, high school bands, and university level bands. However, the flute is still used in the military, orchestras, symphonies, jazz ensembles, rock bands, woodwind ensembles...the list is endless. Interestingly enough, the flute is enjoying a resurgence in popular music, for its' tones can add just the right amount of pizzazz to any music.

If you are considering playing a flute, there are innumerable flutes instructors all over the country. Once you learn the basic fingerings and how to read music, there is ample sheet music, spanning all music genres, designed specifically for flutes. With practice and a decent amount of dedication, you can be playing this beautiful instrument in no time.

While at your local record store, browsing for CDs, you notice how slick and professionally manufactured your favorite artists CDs look. This may be kind of disheartening if your bands last attempt at a demo was burned on your home computer and labeled with a black felt tip marker. Why not step it up and have your next recording manufactured professionally? There are numerous duplication and replication labs out there that are very affordable. The process is very simple, requiring only a couple of things from you. What do you need to start your CD duplication project?

1. CD Artwork

You will need to create the artwork for your CD face and the artwork for any inserts. An insert is the artwork that is displayed in the jewel case, which includes the booklet that comes with many CDs. To create these files, you will need an image editing/creation program. I recommend using Adobe Illustrator, or Adobe Photoshop. But there are many different programs available for you to use that will work just as good.

When creating your artwork, please take in mind that most print houses (CD duplication facilities included) print everything in CMYK format. CMYK refers to the different inks used to print your artwork.

C= Cyan

M= Magenta

Y= Yellow

K= Key (Black)

Fun fact: The reason that black ink is represented by a K and not a B is to prevent it from being confused with Blue.

Fully explaining CMYK printing is an article in itself, and most of you will not need to understand it in any more detail. Just remember that when you open a new file in your graphics creation program, you need to set the file format to CMYK. Also, for high quality printing, your artwork will need to be at least 300 DPI. DPI stands for dots per inch, and is a measure of printing resolution, in particular the number of individual dots of ink a printer or toner can produce within a one-inch space. If your artwork is any less than 300 DPI, the final print will most likely be blurry. Refer to your CD duplication houses documentation for any further information, as specifications vary from company to company.

2. Audio Files

All audio is converted to .CDA format when pressed (replicated) or burned (duplicated) on to a compact disc. If you have had your music recorded professionally, they will provide you with a master. A master is the original copy of your recording on a disc (or tape), used to create CDs and records. CD quality audio files are usually presented to your CD duplication house in the form of uncompressed 44.1 kHz, 16-bit stereo .WAV files. You will need to check with the company that is manufacturing your CDs, because like your artwork, specifications vary from company to company.

These two items prepared correctly, will net you a fine looking (and sounding) batch of CDs. Keep in mind, video buffs, that most of these duplication companies also duplicate DVDs. I hope that all of you, musicians and filmmakers, realize now that it doesnt take that much to bridge the gap from amateur to professional quality media. Bring your next project to the next level!

House Music DJ Magazines

Here is a review of the best house music dj magazines on the planet. Over the past decade a lot of magazines in the electronic music dj arena have gone down, and only the strongest have survived. Recently there has been a major increase in people who are interested in electronic music and the following magazines are blooming with advertising dollars pouring in!

  1. MixMag - has been noted as the best selling dance magazine in the world. Unfortunately they don't have an online version of this magazine but their inclusion of cd's with each release makes it a pretty good subscription to have. For instance, they had an amazing new compilation from Paul Oakenfold in a past issue! The annual subscription runs for 36.00 in the UK and 60.00 in US/Canada so it's a little pricey, but again the inclusion of a cd with each magazine. Get a subscription at www.mixmag.net
  2. DJMag - another UK magazine which is once again getting a revival through all the major music events and releases offers each copy in PDF format for a fraction of the price. The printed price is 3.95 an issue whereas the online PDF download is only 83p or you can get an annual membership for just 10 (38 printed)! Very smart indeed as this just bloat their subscribers! The great thing about this magazine is all the insider info on all the upcoming events several months in advance. The downside is that the layout is not the most professional and it is a little hard on the eyes as to where you should focus on. Nevertheless, you can try a 2 week trial subscription online to see if you like it. Get a subscription at www.djmag.com
  3. BPM Magazine - By far the most successful North American DJ magazine, BPM has taken on whole new world offering their editions free to read online! And what's even better is that the intelligent interface of the magazine allows you to click on all the links to the web sites! Looking at the vast high quality advertising in this magazine it becomes quite apparent why it's online version is free. Probably the most stylish of all the magazines there is quite a lot of variety in the fashion and dj gear reviewed in BPM. If you still want a hard copy of this magazine the rate is only $20/yr for US Subscribers and $40 for Canadian subscribers. Get a subscription at www.bpmmagazine.net
  4. URB Magazine - features a blend of hip hop and electronic music info with DJ culture, technology and studio gear reviews. For US subscribers only they have a $10/6 issue special going on right now or you can get an annual membership (10 issues) for $15 US, $40 for Canadians, and $70 for international orders. Get a subscription at www.urb.com

Free Music Marketing

Even if you're sleeping on your buddy's couch, you CAN promote your band with little or no money. (You will need a computer and internet access)

#1. Get an Email Account. Free email accounts are available from Gmail, Hotmail or a lot of other web-based email companies. Simply go to their homepage and sign up for an account, and you'll be up and going in minutes.

#2. Get a MySpace Page. You can get the band a MySpace site for free. There you can also load up some of your songs, photos, etc. Once you have your site up email all your friends and fans to come check it out and add them to your friend list. You can then contact them all at once to announce future gigs, song releases, etc.

#3. Get Something to Sell. You can't make any money if you don't have anything to sell. When you're playing gigs, even free ones can make you money by selling stuff to the audience. Make sure you have copies of your music on CD or a flash drive to sell. You can also sell merchandise with your band's name and logo on it. You can do this online for free by setting up a virtual storefront at CafPress.com. They'll give you a little store front site and shore how your logo looks on multiple items you select. Once someone buys the stuff, they handle all the billing and shipping and send you a check.

#4. Get a Sponsor. No, not an AA sponsor! I mean a corporate sponsor who will give your band money to promote their company. Start off by looking for "Angel" sponsors. These could be parents, grandparents or friends of the family who have a little extra money to invest in your career. Then look to companies who would benefit from advertising to the audience you will be playing to. Auto dealers, clothing stores, soft drink or beer distributors, are also a good prospects. Show them that their money will be going directly into the creation of the marketing materials, and not the band beer fund! For example, you put their logo with yours on T-shirts, flyers, posters, banners, etc., in exchange for them paying for the cost of creating those pieces.

#5. Alert The Media. Contact local radio and TV station and offer to play any on or off air events or parties they are having. You may or may not get paid this time, but having your name on the minds and lips of the local movers and shakers can only help your career.

Get FREE music marketing tips, tricks and techniques like the pros use.

Zune Guides

Are You in the Zune? Zune is the latest portable media player technology to come from Microsoft. It looks remarkably similar to the ipod but has a few added features built in which will appeal to many customers. It has a 30gb hard drive, a built in fm tuner, a 3 inch screen and wifi networking. The methods of downloading mp3 files are slightly different to ipods in that they are available free for 3 plays, with the option to purchase if required from their Zune Marketplace. The Zune also has the option to transfer files to other Zune players, in the same way that bluetooth works, so they are compatible with other Zunes. The Zune also has additional features available like the car pack and travel pack. The car pack is very useful as the Zune has a built in fm tuner which then doubles up as a car radio. The travel pack contains earphones, travel case and adaptor, ideal to take on holidays or when travelling.

At the moment the Zune is available to order in a limited number of colours but I have no doubt that in the future there will be lots more accessories and cases etc available to make the Zune player as popular and personalised as other brands. After all it is still early days and upgrades and newer models will be in the pipeline. Personally I have experienced many problems with the itunes package that is necessary for ipods. My computer although with a large memory and hard drive was malfunctioning regularly while the itunes program was installed, but instantly rectified when I removed it. Consequently, my children use a separate computer for transferring files onto their ipods. Because of this I shall watch with interest the development of Zune players and hope that with microsofts knowledge and research they can overcome similar problems.

I hope you have found this useful as a starting point to learning about zune players. If you are interested in finding out more about Zune you can find information here.

5 Easy Ways To Make Better Beats - Professionally

Drums, the best loved part of making a music track, well for me anyway. Get the drums wrong and the tracks fails. No one can listen to it, no one can dance to it. So instead of making a "waste-of-time-track", try out these tips to get the most out of your beats:

Beat tip #1.Always use quality products. Whether you are making top beats or grime riddled tunes, quality sounds will show your intention to your future. Can't be bothered and bedroom musician are what hissing, and clicks within a beat promote. Now most of us are bedroom musicians, but you always should be giving off professionalism. That is the point, you can be a bedroom musician but still produce quality tracks. A poor sample library is the easiest way into any recycle bin. Hardrives are now large enough to have thousands of quality sounds. If you are downloading on dial-up get a download manager to pause downloads if they are too big. Let nothing stop you in pursuit of finding quality sounds. Please Note it is quite hard to make grime tunes without them sounding like a distorted mess, and that is why NIN (Nine Inch Nails) are so good. There is more processing and more quality within those tunes to make them that dirty. As a side note, 8-bit Commodore 64 sounds are cool within the right quality drum sounds, but by themselves they are nostalgic but can not seriously carry a track without help.

Beat tip #2.Ask any woman how to make their hair feel fatter/ fuller bodied/ better...and they will say...layer. That is exactly the same with any sort of beat or percussion noise. I have a great little note that I give myself when I try to find a great beat...don't look, there is no such thing as finding the perfect beat. I have found that there is always something wrong with anything that I download. I have to alter the sound to make it useful. I have to layer. Sure the sound I downloaded is say a good kick, but it should be fatter. So what do I do? I figure that I need a lower end kick, and apply that, to get a little bit deeper/ fatter I will also incorporate a sub bass sound. It is not uncommon for producers to layer beats up to 5 times with various other percussion loops complimentary to the initial loop. I have to say it is uncommon for producers not to layer.

Beat tip #3.Taking tip one and tip two into consideration, what else can we do to make a beat feel...fatter, more sub level? EQ? Well yes, and no. There is no amount of EQ to put onto a beat for it to sound deeper. Why? Well EQ will only work on frequencies that are already there. There are many a musician (a large percentage) that will EQ everything. That is not good. You have then got a situation where every sound is fighting for a place in the same mix. So adding EQ to something that has not got the range in the first place will do nothing. So what do you do? Either get rid of the kick that you downloaded and get one with a bit of sub boom in it, or do tip 1 and 2- there is no other way.

Beat tip #4.The kick is the favourite sample going, and unfortunately it is the most troublesome. This is seen in the Dance and Electronic music scene. BANG BANG BANG, goes the thudding kick and nothing else is recognisable within the beat. So what do we do to avoid over kickness? Make sure that the kick is playing on a separate channel so that it doesn't interrupt anything else, and you don't interrupt anything else when you alter it. Apply some compression to the kick, then adjust the make-up gain so that it starts to settle in and ultimately sound right with your other loops.

Beat tip #5.To sparkle up your beats why not add some processing power to them? Adding a slight amount of Overdrive can make your flat beat beef up a little bit more. Adding some Reverb can also add some depth, however it can also loose the drums original Oomph, and make the drum sound farther back within the track so be careful when you reverb. Add and remove, add and remove- always keep on checking the beat within the track at many different points to see if it sits well throughout the track. The newly processed beat might sound really funky next to your bassline, however if you have vocals, the bass and beat combo might sound too overpowering. Always check and monitor any processing that you do.
